Free Online Black History Class: History of the Coon, Mammy, and Pickaninny and Blackface

The terms "coon," "pickaninny," "mammy," and "sambo" were all created to demean Black people by portraying them as lazy, mischievous, criminal, unattractive, and worthless unless under the strict supervision of Whites.
